LAST CALL POETRY LIVE EVENT

Could all senior pupils who have received a letter about Poetry Live 1/3/10 and are interested in attending please return the permission slip and £15 to Mrs Henderson (308) TODAY (Monday).

DANCE CLUB

The dance club starts on Wednesday 10th February at 3.45-5pm in the P.E Department.

SALOU TRIP

Would all the pupils who have not handed in a passport form and photograph or not had their picture taken please see me as soon as possible.

YORK TRIP

Any pupil interested in a trip to York during the Suspended Timetable should come and collect a form from Mrs. Simpson in Room 311. We will spend time in York visiting various attractions, have time for shopping and a full day at Flamingo Land Theme Park.

PLASTIC BOTTLES

The Eco Team is collecting 500ml Plastic Drinks bottles to recycle to make herb greenhouses in the Home Economics kitchens. Please put your bottles in the box provided in the school canteen, thanks.

ECO COMMITTEE - STAFF AND PUPIL REPRESENTATIVES

Full Eco Committee meeting for all staff and pupil representatives on Wednesday 10th February at 1pm in room 803. If you are unable to attend please tell Miss Falconer in the Geography Department.

LEAVERS 2010

First deposits are still needed for our leavers dance and meal at the George on 24th June 2010. If you haven’t paid your 1st deposit please hand it in to Jonathan, Katie or the Office by Friday 12th February or you will not have a place at leavers. Thank you.

S6 VALENTINES PROM

The Valentines prom will take place next Thursday (11th February) 7.30-late. Tickets are £4. You can buy them from Eve, Matt or Blair, thanks.

HOLIDAY PLANS

Daydreaming already about your summer and Easter breaks? What about trying something completely different? Porty students over many years have come along to SU holidays running during school breaks. Whether you want to try a new adventure activity like gorge walking, abseiling or go-karting, want to meet other people your own age or even want a week at Easter where people will help you with your revision as well as give you a great break, SU Holidays receive rave reviews from thousands of teenagers annually. Pick up your brochure from the school office from Monday or come along to Mrs Simpson’s Rm 311 this Monday lunch time to see video footage, ask questions and hear stories from people who have been along! S1/2 HISTORY CLUB

The History Club for S1 and S2 will meet every Thursday at lunchtime in Room 209. Bring your own lunch, relax and enjoy.

HAITI COLLECTION

Sincerest thanks to everyone in Portobello High School who made a donation to the Haiti Disaster Appeal. Today I have sent off a cheque to the value of £737.02 to Mary’s Meals Thank you again. (Mary’s Meals provide food for orphaned school children in Haiti)

SFA COACHING LEVEL 2

There is an opportunity for those who have completed the SFA level 1 award to complete the Level 2 course on the 18th and 19th Feb from 10-4pm. The course is free of charge; however, they are looking for a commitment that students who complete the course will then volunteer at local boys/girls football clubs for a minimum of 30 hours. This would then allow you to work towards the level 3 award. If you are interested, please speak to Miss Day ASAP as places are allocated on a first come, first serve basis.

FIT FOR GIRLS

Fit For Girls is a national project which is trying to get more girls active in PE and in sport outside school. As a school we are looking to establish an all girls group committee which will meet regularly and discuss reasons why some girls may not enjoy being active and what can we, as a school do to improve the facilities, curriculum, extra curricular activities which we offer. We are really keen to hear what you girls think…! If you would be interested in joining a committee (which will meet approximately once every 8 – 10 weeks) then please give your name to your PE teacher. We are looking for a range of girls ; those who love PE, think PE is okay and those who don’t like PE, those who do extra curricular, and those who don’t, and people who have ideas about what they would like PE to be like in our school. This is a great opportunity to have your voice heard and make a change in PE and Sport. Don’t be shy – your PE teacher will be taking names during class time, break and lunch so pop down when you can to sign up!

AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL GROUP

Amnesty International are a group who campaign for human rights around the world. If you would like to be involved in starting Porty’s own Amnesty group, come along to a meeting in Room 310 on Tuesday 9th at lunchtime.

FANCY DRESS DAY FOR CHARITY

UNICEF day in PHS has been postponed until Friday 12th February instead of Friday 5th February. UNICEF day is a FANCY DRESS DAY FOR CHARITY so please start planning your outfits now AND start collecting cash for the collection which will be taken during registration on Friday 12th February.

PORTY SU GROUP

Want somewhere relaxing for your lunch? Wednesdays you can come along to Porty SU group where everyone is welcome for chat, fun and to share ideas about the big questions of life. We are currently meeting in Rm 311.

SCO MUSIC FACTORY RECORDING SESSION

The Recording session involving 4 S6 students will take place on Tuesday 9th February 10:30 – 12:00 in central Edinburgh. The Scottish Chamber Orchestra would be grateful if you could release Brendan Rafferty 6D07, Chris Black 6C05, Lachlan McIntosh 6C02 and Fraser de Banzie 6B08 for periods 1-4. Thank you.

FOOTBALL TRIP TO THE ENGLISH PREMIERSHIP

Any 4th year students interested in going to see Blackburn vs. Birmingham in the English Premiership(on Sun 21/3/10), should attend a short meeting in Mr Walker’s room (Rm 502) at morning break on Wed. 3/2/10.

TALENT SHOW COMMITTEE

Could all members of the talent show committee please note that the date of the talent show has been moved to Friday 26th March.
Could all acts please check that they are available on this date. If there are any problems please come along to one of our meetings, the dates will be in the notices.
Could all acts please note that you are responsible for obtaining any CD’s or music you need.
Could all committee members please attend our next meeting on Tuesday 2nd February, after school in Abercorn. Attendance is essential!

SALOU TRIP

Please return the passport details as soon as possible.
If you don’t have a passport photograph, don’t worry I will take your picture. A number of pupils have still to pay last month’s instalment.

TRIP TO YORK

If you are interested in a visit to York during the Suspended Timetable, please come and collect a form from Mrs. Simpson in Room 311. We will travel by train and stay two nights in York. As well as visiting the attractions in York itself, we will also visit Flamingo Land Theme Park on the middle day. More details on the form.

PORTY GLEE CLUB

Following on from the success of 'Oliver!' last term, the music department are establishing their very own music and theatre style group, aptly named Porty Glee Club!
Glee Club begins this Monday 1st February after school in the music department where we will begin working on material to perform in the Spring concert in March.

Junior group (S1 - 2) will meet in G08 with Mrs Brown,
Senior group (S3 - 6) will meet in G09 with Mrs Sumerling.

In addition, this year the spring concert will have a 1960's theme. If there are any solo or group acts who are interested in performing something suitable, please see Mrs Sumerling or Mrs Brown in the music department
